Goals and Planning

Goals are a great away to begin changing your behaviour. It helps you clearly define your reasons for change and gives you something to work towards. When change gets hard, you can look at the things you want to achieve which can help motivate you to stay on course. Goals can also help you see the good in change and align your action to what you want out of life.

Goals are great, but you need to also outline steps and behaviors that will help you achieve your goals. This is why planning is so important!

A specific type of planning called ‘if-then’ planning has been proven to be effective in changing behavior. The Melbourne Centre for Behaviour Change defines ‘if-then’ planning as identifying situations that are usually associated with the behavior you are trying to change and then you planning a desired response. This method is designed to overcome your old habits in these situations.

The self-dialogue when conducting this type of planning should be “if this situation arises, then I will act in this way”.
